Nigeria has made a huge leap in the latest FIBA World Ranking for Women, moving up four places to
claim the eighth spot, ahead of countries like Germany and Brazil. This marks the first time an African
national team, whether male or female, has entered the top 10 of the FIBA World Rankings.
Nigeria’s D’Tigress’ historic leap into the top 10 comes on the back of a sensational run during the just concluded Paris 2024 Olympic Games. D’Tigress secured their place in the history books in France by becoming the first African team to reach the quarterfinals in either the men’s or women’s categories.
Their journey began with a commanding 75-62 victory over Australia, who later went on to win the bronze medal and despite a setback against hosts France, where they lost 54-75, the Nigerian team bounced back with a strong 79-70 win over Canada to advance from Group B.
